Project Overview
The Lebanese National Library reopened in 2018 after more than 20 years of closure. It had remained shut since the Lebanese Civil War. Originally built in 1907, the Sanayeh building stands as a historic landmark. Today, the renewed library serves as a vibrant cultural center. It includes an auditorium, multipurpose rooms, and exhibition spaces. In addition, a spacious public reading hall welcomes visitors.
A Collaborative Cultural Revival
This ambitious project became possible through strong collaboration. The Lebanese Ministry of Culture led the initiative.
Moreover, support came from the European Commission and Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani. Their contributions ensured the revival of one of Lebanon’s most important cultural institutions.
Design Challenges and Vision
The design team faced several key challenges. First, the project needed to reflect the library’s civic and national importance. At the same time, it had to integrate seamlessly into its surroundings. Notably, the site sits near the Sanayeh Garden, along with other public buildings. Therefore, the design carefully respects the urban context.
In addition, budget constraints required a practical and efficient solution. As a result, the design balances ambition with feasibility.
Architectural Solution
To meet modern needs, a new underground extension was introduced. This addition includes four basement levels dedicated to operations and storage. Meanwhile, the historic Sanayeh building underwent careful restoration. Both local and international experts contributed to preserving its heritage value. Furthermore, a contemporary reading hall connects the two original wings. This new element highlights the contrast between traditional and modern architecture. Consequently, the project creates a unique architectural dialogue.
